“As a Square Lake property owner since 1988, there is no conservation issue of greater importance to the Association I serve, than the long-term preservation and protection of Square Lake and the surrounding watershed, including retaining the pristine natural, undeveloped beauty of Wilder Forest. Welcome to
Square Lake
A Letter from Your President
Dear Association Members:
Thanks for visiting your new website, a learning platform for increasing awareness of the water quality threats to Square Lake, including a proactive focus on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) risk management.
As a private educational resource for Square Lake Association (SLA) members, the site is designed to:
Provide a centralized “go-to” online information resource for Lake information, research initiatives, and shoreland management best practices.
Inform Lake users of watercraft and County Park rules and regulations.
Grow Association membership from its current base of 45 households, and inspire member volunteerism.
Strengthen SLA strategic partnering bridges with Minnesota Lakes & Rivers Advocates (MLR); Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC); Washington County Public Works (WCPW); Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR); Washington Conservation District (MNWCD); and Carnelian Marine on St Croix Watershed District (CMSCWD).
We’re grateful for your ongoing support of our Association mission to increase AIS education and awareness, and proactively advance Lake preservation and shoreland protection best practices.

Introduction to Square Lake
Square Lake is a unique 200-acre natural resource located in May Township, Minnesota, near the St. Croix River, a jewel to be treasured and protected.
The Square Lake Association (SLA) is a four-decade, non-profit, home-owners organization, committed to natural resource preservation, conservation, stewardship, and community collaboration.
Ongoing studies of other Minnesota lakes infested with Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) - including Eurasian Milfoil, Zebra Mussels, Starry Stonewort, and Spiny Waterfleas - dramatically show that AIS poses an existential threat to Square Lake, proving that reactive remedies are far more complex and costly than proactive, preventive actions – if even possible. Square Lake is one of two lakes in the region to not be infested with AIS.
As homeowners, our property valuations will rise or fall depending on the level of individual and collective stewardship actions and commitment.
As a progressive Association, our collective mission is to proactively protect and preserve Square Lake’s natural beauty, clarity and balance for future generations.
