St. Croix 360 shares river and watershed stories to inspire stewardship. It was launched in 2011 by Square Lake Association’s friend, Greg Seitz, of Marine on St Croix, who’s been publishing new stories every week since then about the St. Croix River, and surrounding watershed. It is an entirely independent media outlet supported solely by its readers. Topics include everything that makes the river special, from its rich diversity of living things to artists inspired by the river, from fishing to human history.

Over the years, the site has been the first to report several major stories, including plans to triple flows of tar sands oil through a pipeline across the headwaters, an incident when runoff from a former gravel pit obliterated a tributary creek, and the ongoing efforts to protect the river from proposed factory farms. It has also featured stories about farmers taking steps to reduce pollution from their fields, restoration of endangered species, and stories about everyone from pre-European indigenous people to the estates of railroad barons.

Today, St. Croix 360 has more than 3,000 email subscribers and more than 200 financial supporters. All articles and the weekly email newsletter are offered free of charge, with financial contributions greatly appreciated. I found this interesting and informative article from a few years ago in TwinCities.com about Greg and St. Croix 360, and thought you’d enjoy the read: “As the St. Croix marks 50 years as a protected riverway, it’s ‘like taking a step back in time.’
